The charts illustrate the proportions of people who were employed in three sectors including agriculture, industry, and services between1980 and 2010.
Overall, industry and services were always the major employment sectors in all countries, except for China. In addition, the proportions of people employed in the industry sector experienced an upward trend in all countries, while the figures for agriculture and services declined over the period.
In 1980, 60% of employees in Germany worked in the Industry sector, while the figure for those in the USA was over 50%. After 20 years, these figures soared to 80% and 70%, respectively. The services sector in Germany and the USA both employed nearly half of the workforce in 1980, but both figures dropped to roughly 40% in 2010. The proportions of people employed in agriculture in these two countries followed a similar pattern: standing at 5% and 10% in 1980 but falling by half after 20 years.
In Japan, half of the workforce were employed in the industry sector in 1980, higher than the figure for those in the same sector in China by 10%. After 20 years, while the percentage of employees in this sector in Japan almost doubled (at 80%), the figure for China remained unchanged. Agriculture was the major employment sector in China (at 70%), compared to only 10% of people working in this sector in Japan. After 20 years, this sector still ranked first as the major employer in China, but accounted for a minimal percentage of the workforce in Japan. 50% of the workforce were employed in the services sector in China in 1980, but this figure plummeted to 20% in 2010. Similarly, the service sector employed 40% of the workforce in Japan in 1980, but only 30% of people worked in this sector in 2010.
