The diagram depicts a simple method of turning dirty water into clean and drinkable water.

In general, the whole process involves only some simple equipment and natural materials and can be done in a few simple steps.

Before the process takes place, a plastic barrel and a storage drum are prepared and put next to each other, with the former being placed slightly above the latter. These two containers are connected by a pipe running from the bottom of the barrel into the side of the drum. Then, gravel, charcoal, and sand are placed inside the barrel for water-filtering purposes. Two taps are also added to the system, one at the bottom of the drum and the other at the pipe near the top of the barrel.

The water-filtering process commences when the barrel’s lid is lifted, and dirty water is poured inside. The water is then filtered when going through the gravel, charcoal, and sand before travelling to the drum through the pipe. Water is finally stored in the drum and can be taken out for drinking by opening the tap.
