The graphs illustrate the import and export values of Australia with China, Japan, and the USA between 2004 and 2009.

In general, Australia’s import and export values with all three countries increased throughout the years. Japan was the only market where Australia’s exports surpassed imports during the whole period.

Australia imported nearly 20 billion Australian dollars worth of goods from China in 2004, compared to only around 12 billion dollars in import values. Both figures increased rapidly to over 30 billion dollars after 2008, but in 2009, the export value reached nearly 35 billion dollars and surpassed the imports by about 5 billion dollars. On the other hand, Australia’s import and export figures with the USA were roughly 20 and 10 billion Australian dollars, respectively. These figures followed an identical pattern throughout the years, as they both rose slightly by about 3 billion dollars in 2008 before falling by about 2 billion dollars in 2009.

Regarding the Japanese market, Australia’s exports there began at 20 billion dollars in 2004, rose moderately to nearly 30 billion dollars in 2007 before surging to a peak of over 40 million dollars in 2008. However, this figure plummeted to only about 30 billion dollars in 2009. The figure for Australian import from Japan was much lower throughout the years: it stayed at 20 billion Australian dollars from 2004 to 2007, rose slightly by about 1 billion dollars in 2008, and fell back to 20 billion in 2009.
