The graph illustrates the unemployment rate and how many people left Ireland from 1988 and 2008.

In general, the unemployment rate and the number of people leaving Ireland showed similar patterns throughout the years: they started high but
fell sharply in the middle of the period before rising in the final years.

About 40,000 people left Ireland in 1988, while the unemployment rate in the same year was about 14%. The figure for those migrating from the
country then peaked at nearly 80,000 in around 1989 but later plummeted to roughly 30,000 in 2000. On the other hand, the unemployment rate fell to 12% between 1989 and 1990, rose again to the beginning point (14%) in around 1992 before plunged to just under 3% in 2000.

From 2000 to 2008, the unemployment rate in Ireland remained stable at first but then skyrocketed to around 10%. The number of people leaving
the country followed a similar trend, rising from 30,000 in 2000 to about 50,000 people in 2008.
