Some people argue that all students are expected to actively participate in voluntary activities that contribute to the betterment of the local community. While acknowledging the tremendous merits of volunteering, I believe that participation in such endeavors should be a personal choice rather than a mandatory requirement.
Volunteering brings significant benefits to both the community and the volunteer students. Initiatives such as beach cleanups and tutoring underprivileged children directly enhance the environment and education levels, positively changing the local community. For students, these experiences are particularly valuable as they help develop essential skills. By interacting with diverse groups and navigating through challenges, students can foster valuable skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. These attributes not only facilitate personal growth but also bolster their resumes and offer them a competitive edge in job applications since many employers nowadays appreciate empathy and proactivity, which are often cultivated through volunteering.
Despite these advantages, I firmly believe that students should have the freedom to choose whether they want to volunteer or not, for several reasons. When students are obligated to volunteer, it can distort the true essence of volunteering overtime, which should be rooted in a sincere desire to contribute and make a positive impact. Moreover, mandating volunteer participation can lead to students approaching their assigned duties with a sense of reluctance. This lack of enthusiasm can result in subpar performance, and in some cases, may lead to further hassles for others. For instance, organizers may find themselves spending additional time correcting mistakes or addressing behavioral problems caused by participants who are not genuinely invested in the voluntary work.
In conclusion, voluntary activities can offer numerous benefits to students and the local community. Nonetheless, it is crucial to maintain their voluntary nature to uphold the genuine essence of volunteering and maximize the positive impact of volunteer efforts.
