Opinions are divided on whether senior citizens’ quality of life has become better compared to the past or it still is equally bad to grow old in the present day. Despite certain challenges that come with old age in a modern society, I agree that life is now better for the elderly as they receive superior healthcare and government aid or assistance from many organizations.

Even though senior citizens now are still vulnerable to reduced flexibility and age-related ailments, the 21st century is a period of impressive progress regarding improvements in people’s health. Many years ago, illnesses such as smallpox, malaria or monkeypox were deemed life-threatening, especially to to old people with weakened immune systems. This is mostly because of the poor prevention of diseases, the limitations in medical research and treatment at that time. However, this is not the case today, as new vaccines, antibiotics and other effective cures have been developed, which shields the old from many viruses and have greatly enhanced their immune system. As a result, advancements in medicine enable the elderly to live much longer and healthier lives compared to the past.

Aside from health concerns, money is another reason why some people believe getting old is unfavorable in the modern world. Admittedly, bad planning leaves some seniors with no savings and they still have to work to keep up with property tax or maintain their health insurance in spite of their declining health. However, in recent years, there have been substantial improvements in financial assistance and pension schemes to provide economic support for the elderly. Through these support systems from the government, elderly individuals now have a greater likelihood of maintaining a comfortable standard of living during their retirement years. Besides government’s support, there are more benefactors nowadays who are willing to sponsor organizations that financially aid old citizens.

In conclusion, old people now have better quality of life than in the past thanks to medical advances and increased financial security.
