The table offers insights into the number of local and international students pursuing research majors in Australian universities in 2001 and 2010, while the pie chart delineates the proportion of research students by gender throughout this period.
Overall, the total number of research students increased significantly over the surveyed time, with the domination of local learners in both years. In addition, males accounted for a higher share of research students than females.
Regarding the participation by nationality, around 33,700 Australian students attended research courses in 2001, seven times higher than their foreign counterparts, with over 5,100 people. The timescale of the following 10 years witnessed a mild growth in the number of local research learners, to nearly 39,500. At the same time, although the figure for non-local participants engaging in research fields registered a threefold increase to approximately 14,600, it was still outnumbered by a ratio of around 3 to 1 in comparison with the figure for Australian learners.
Concerning the breakdown of research learners by gender, the percentage of female learners from foreign countries in research courses was lowest with merely 4% in 2001, which was 5% lower than that of males. During that time, the figure for Australian students taking research fields shared a relative similarity in gender distribution, with 44% for males and 43% for females. 10 years later, there was a shift in research interests among international learners, in which the proportion of females experienced a significant rise to 15%, surpassing the figure of 12% for their male counterparts despite a slight increase of 3%. In contrast, a downward trend was seen in the share of local students engaging in research majors. Specifically, the figure for Australian male learners exhibited a modest decrease to 38%, while a decline to 35% was shown in the proportion of females.
