The bar charts compare the proportions of movies released by genres and their shares of ticket sales in 1996 and 2000.

Overall, drama and comedy remained the most popular among cinema audiences, while romance genre did not perform well at the box office after 4 years. Additionally, the release of movies among the surveyed genres recorded an upward trend over the period, except for romance movies.

Drama accounted for over 25% of the movies released in 1996, and the number later rose to 35% after four years. Following this was comedy and fantasy which constituted 20% and around 12%, respectively, of the movies in 1996, and both saw an increase of around 9% in 2000. Romance ranked lowest with only roughly 6% in both 1996 and 2000.

In terms of ticket sales, comedy topped the chart with 20%, followed by drama with 16%, and these figures rose by around 3% and 1%, respectively, after four years. 5% of the tickets sales belonged to romance movies in 1996, double the sales of fantasy. However, the figure for romance movies fell to only around 4% in 2000, while that for fantasy nearly tripled in the same year.
